Carnell Augustino lake (born July 15, 1967), is an ex-professional American football player. He was a member the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team. After one season, he was the UCLA Bruins’ cornerbacks coach under Rick Neuheisel. He was the Steelers’ defensive backs coach from February 2018 to February 2018.
In the Steelers’ 51-0 defeat to the Cleveland Browns, his first professional regular season start and debut was made. Lake made five combined tackles on October 15, 1989. He also made two pass deflections and recovered a fumble. In Week 6, he made his first interception in his career during a 17-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Lake intercepted a pass from Browns’ quarterback Bernie Kosar with one hand. He was awarded the AFC Defensive Player for Week 6. In Week 9, Lake recorded his first career sack against Broncos’ quarterback John Elway during the Steelers’ 34-7 defeat at the Denver Broncos. In 1989, he finished his rookie season with 70 combined tackles. He also had six forced fumbles recovered and one interception.
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Lake in the second round (34th overall) of the 1989 NFL Draft. Lake was the third safety drafted in 1989. The selection of Lake by the Steelers was immediately labeled a reach by NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper.
