Initially a street hot dog vendor, Milton Street rose to fame for his activism opposing the city’s zoning laws regarding housing and vending.

Milton Street was chosen as a Democrat for the 181st District of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1978 and the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1980.

But shortly after winning, he switched to the Republican party, giving that group control of the State Senate.
