Waldemar Januszczak Biography

Waldemar Januszczak is one of the most popular and richest Art Critic who was born on January 12, 1954 in Basingstoke, England, United Kingdom. Waldemar Januszczak (born 12 January 1954) is an English art critic, TV documentary producer and presenter. Formerly, he was the art critic at The Guardian, he took the same job in The Sunday Times in 1992 and has twice been awarded The Critic of the Year award.

In his review of the exhibition Americans at Paris in the London’s National Gallery during 2006, the artist criticized James McNeill’s Symphony in White No 1 as “a clumsy bit of cake-making with thick smudges of white rubbed into the canvas in coarse, dry skid marks”. “Even Whistler’s renowned mother manages here to underwhelm”, said he. The creator Jamie Shovlin, Januszczak later the same year revealed in his essay how the 1970s glam rock group Lustfaust was a band that “cocked a notorious snook at the music industry in the late 1970s by giving away their music on blank cassettes and getting their fans to design their own covers”. Lustfaust had never existed beyond the fiction of Shovlin. Januszczak remarked that Shovlin deserves praise for his ability to bring us back to the vital role for the performer in contemporary society. He also made it clear his position that “Reality simply cannot be trusted any more”.

Waldemar Januszczak has made many appearances on television, on which medium he has presented programmes on the history of art. He has also made appearances on programmes such as The Culture Show and Newsnight Review. Beginning on 27 November 2012, he presented a four-part series The Dark Ages: An Age of Light about the art and architecture of the Dark Ages on BBC Four.

After studying history of art at the University of Manchester, Januszczak became an art critic – and then arts editor – of The Guardian. In 1990 he was appointed head of arts at the UK’s Channel 4 television and in 1992 he became art critic for The Sunday Times. He has been voted Critic of the Year twice by the Press Association.

In 2004, he was different from the majority of critics in his defense of the work that was Stella Vine, singling her out as an example of praise in his otherwise scathing critique of Saatchi Gallery’s New Blood exhibit (“although I wasn’t sure if I was going to appreciate the work of Vine however, I was pleasantly surprised. It was an interesting piece of work”) and continues to support her, observing “a combination of empathy and cynicism that can be startling.” The following year, he also participated in a Christmas special edition for critics of the popular television game show University Challenge.
