About Luis Garavito
Luis Garavito was a Colombian serial killer whose reign of terror is indelibly etched in the darkest corners of criminal history.
A figure of sinister notoriety, he was a serial killer, sex offender, pedophile, and necrophile whose crimes sent shudders throughout Colombia and the world.
In a bone-chilling revelation that rocked society in October 1999, Garavito confessed to a gruesome series of offenses.
His crimes included the rape, torture, mutilation, and murder of 147 minors, predominantly young men and boys from western Colombia.
Garavito’s terrifying journey into depravity began in the autumn of 1980, as he embarked on a horrific series of torture-rapes on minors aged 6 to 16, leaving a trail of suffering that touched at least 200 young lives.
However, it was between October 4, 1992, and April 21, 1999, that Garavito’s darkest chapter unfolded. During this period, he committed the rape, torture, mutilation, and murder of an additional 189 minors in Colombia.
Shockingly, his horrors extended beyond Colombia’s borders, with links to four more murders in Ecuador during the summer of 1998.
The relentless nightmare that Garavito inflicted on innocent lives took a turn in April 1999 when he was apprehended for the attempted rape of a 12-year-old child.
After months of suspicion, a shocking confession in October 1999 sealed his fate. The Colombian justice system acted swiftly, sentencing him to a staggering 1,853 years and 9 days in jail.
The darkness of his deeds continued to cast a long shadow until his passing on October 12, 2023, at the age of 66.
